Mental and Health Service Dogs Assisting PTSD Patients

For those who do not know what Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) actually is we’ve included a brief description of this condition and it’s symptoms below.  Clinical information on this disorder is widely documented and our intention is not to post a deep analysis on this matter. What we really want to point out is how Service Dogs are trained to emotionally support, guide and protect those who live with this condition.

Service Dogs are trained to assist their owners in many different ways. Mental and Health Service Dogs, a slight variation of Medical Assistance Dogs are trained to predict when their owners are triggered to a panic or an anxiety attack. When such a situation is about to scale up, these dogs will lovingly alert their humans and prevent them from undergoing a sudden outburst.

If you have experienced severe trauma or a life-threatening event, you may develop symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Maybe you felt like your life or the lives of others were in danger, or you thought that you had no control over what was happening. While in the military, you may have witnessed people being injured or dying, or you may have been physically harmed yourself.

Some of the most common symptoms of PTSD include recurring memories or nightmares of the event(s),sleeplessness, loss of interest, or feeling numb, anger, and irritability.
